Mininova is Dead

I just found out the Mininova team decided to throw in the towel.

“From now on, only Content Distribution torrents are allowed”
Today is an important day in the history of Mininova. From now on, we are limiting Mininova.org to our Content Distribution service. By doing so, we comply with the ruling of the Court of Utrecht of last August.

Unfortunately the court ruling leaves us no other option than to take our platform offline, except for the Content Distribution service. According to the verdict (Dutch link) we have to prevent uploads of torrents to Mininova that refer to certain titles or to similar-looking titles. We’ve been testing some filtering systems the last couple of months, but we found that it’s neither technically nor operationally possible to implement a 100% working filter system. Therefore, we decided that the only option is to limit Mininova to Content Distribution torrents from now on. We are still considering an appeal at this moment.

We launched our Content Distribution service in 2007. This service allows producers and artists to easily publish and distribute their content for free through Mininova. The launch of Content Distribution has proven to be a success. Countless content owners have used Content Distribution to distribute their content (e.g. albums and documentaries) for free to millions of users. For example, the Dutch band Silence is Sexy released their complete album on Mininova and received the Interactive Award 2009 for doing so. The Dutch television broadcaster VPRO decided to start using Content Distribution in 2009 in order to distribute documentaries.

We would like to thank you for your support. Especially everyone that contributed to Mininova receives a big “thank you!” for the effort! We hope to keep welcoming you on Mininova and our other projects (e.g. Snotr, Dispostable).

Thanks! The Mininova staff

Mininova was one of the largest BitTorrent index sites. It is a directory and search engine for many kinds of torrent files. It does not, however, host its own tracker.  So sad to hear this but I guess it happens. Mininova was one of my favorite torrent sites and also my first.

CodeIgniter Week

All I can say is I love an MVC framework. I started using CodeIgniter when a client of mine asked to edit their site that was coded in CodeIgniter. At first I was lost with all those folders and files, I told myself “The Hell with It”.

Instead of babbling and blindly opening files, I decided to visit the CodeIgniter site. There I was enlightened, with its proper documentation, good video tutorials and a lot of discussions I finally found what I was missing.

I am not new to MVC, but I am very disappointed on my first experience with it. I tried to develop some project using MVC with Zend but it failed… epically failed. So I started to create my own version of an MVC framework, it did not go well as planned, I had to revise and revise until I got tired and dumped it all. But now, I found a new friend.

To the developers that made CodeIgniter possible, Kudos!!!

Sleep

Found this good article about sleeping. I had to post it so that I can share it, so for those of you who only have 4-5 hours of sleep then read this.

You have to know several things like sleep is one of the body’s most mysterious processes. The idea of sleeping well conjures up restful images of fluffy pillows, comfortable blankets and minimal activity. This article provides information to help you get the sleep you need.

What is a Good Night’s Sleep?

Many people would reply by saying a minimum of eight hours of rest. But the answer doesn’t depend solely on how many hours you log in bed. Night after night, you need deep uninterrupted sleep in a bed that provides adequate comfort support and space. What matters most of all is how you feel in the morning. If you wake up full of renewed energy, you’ve had a good night’s sleep.

There is no one formula for how much sleep is enough for you. Expecting all people to need the same amount of rest would be as absurd as expecting them to eat the same amount of food every day. Each of us seems to have an innate sleep “appetite” that is as much a part of our genetic programming as hair color, height and skin tone. Normal sleep times range from five to ten hours; the average is 7 1/2. About one or two people in one hundred can get by with just five hours; another small minority needs twice that amount.

How much sleep is enough for you? To figure out your sleep needs, keep your wake-up time the same every morning and vary your bedtimes. Are you groggy after six hours of shut-eye? Does an extra hour give your more stamina? What about an extra two hours? Since too much time in bed can make some people feel sluggish, don’t assume that more is always better. Listen to your body’s signals and adjust your sleep schedule to suit them.

Keep in mind that sleep needs change with age. And the older you are, the less total sleep time you may need. A newborn may spend 18 hours asleep. From infancy to adulthood, sleep decreases by more than half. Throughout the middle decades of life, seven or eight hours of sleep generally are needed to provide adequate rest. For older individuals, six hours may suffice.

What is sleep?

Sleep is a periodic state of rest during which consciousness of the world is interrupted. According to the University of Wisconsin Department of Medicine, a sleeping person does not respond to low intensity sounds, touches, and other sensory perceptions that he or she would normally respond to immediately while awake. Additionally, sleep is marked by:

  • decreased movement of the skeletal muscles,
  • slowed-down metabolism,
  • and complex and active brain wave patterns.

Sleep consists of five stages and is essential for a healthy body and mind. The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute note that a number of vital tasks during sleep help maintain good health and enable people to function at their best.
